Unit Converter
Convert between units of length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time and data size, using the exact legal definitions of each unit. Area includes the units used for land and flats in India, such as square feet, gaj, cent, guntha and acre, and data size keeps KB (1,000 bytes) and KiB (1,024 bytes) apart. Every unit in the category is shown at once.
How to use Unit Converter
- Pick what to measure: Length, Weight, Temperature, Area, Volume, Speed, Time or Data size.
- Enter the value, then choose the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to. Swap units turns the conversion round.
- Read the result and the rate for one unit, or look down the table to see the value in every unit of that kind. Each value has a copy button.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a gaj?
One gaj, as used for land and plots in north India, is one square yard: 9 square feet, or 0.83612736 square metres. A 100 gaj plot is 900 sq ft, about 83.61 square metres. Select Area, enter the value and choose Gaj (square yard).
How big are a cent and a guntha?
A cent is one hundredth of an acre: 435.6 sq ft, about 40.47 square metres. A guntha is one fortieth of an acre: 1,089 sq ft (121 square yards), about 101.17 square metres. An acre is 43,560 sq ft, and a hectare is 10,000 square metres, about 2.471 acres.
Why isn't bigha included?
Because a bigha has no single size. It differs from state to state, and sometimes between districts in the same state, so any one number would be wrong for many people. The same goes for biswa, kanal and marla. Check the local land records or the revenue department for the value used where the land is, then convert from square feet or square metres here.
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
KB, MB and GB are decimal: 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. KiB, MiB and GiB are binary: 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes and 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes. A "1 TB" drive holds 10¹² bytes, which Windows shows as about 931 GB because it counts in binary while labelling sizes KB, MB and GB. Internet speeds are in bits: 100 Mbit/s moves 12.5 MB per second.
How accurate are the conversions?
The factors are exact definitions, not rounded ones: an inch is 2.54 cm, a foot 0.3048 m, a yard 0.9144 m, a mile 1,609.344 m, a pound 0.45359237 kg, a US gallon 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L) and a UK gallon 4.54609 L. Results are shown to 10 significant figures, and very large or small ones as powers of ten.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9, divide by 5 and add 32: 37 °C is 98.6 °F and 100 °C is 212 °F. To go back, subtract 32, multiply by 5 and divide by 9. Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15. Choose Temperature to do it for any value; negative numbers work too.
