About Scrawlspace

Scrawlspace is a free set of PDF, image and developer tools, plus a hand-drawn whiteboard, that run in your browser instead of on a server.

Who makes it

Scrawlspace is built and maintained by Vikas Kushwaha, an independent developer. You can get in touch through github.com/Tracevikas. Every change that ships is listed in the release log.

How the tools work without uploading your files

Each tool loads its code into your browser and does the work there, on your device. The PDF tools use pdf.js to read and draw pages, pdf-lib to write them, and qpdf compiled to WebAssembly for encryption, repair and compression. OCR uses Tesseract. Image conversion uses the browser's own encoders, with WebAssembly encoders for AVIF and, where the browser can't make it, WebP. SVGs are optimised with SVGO, and iPhone HEIC photos are decoded in the page.

Because nothing is sent to a server, there's no upload wait, no file-size or daily limit set by us, and nothing of yours kept anywhere. You can check it yourself: open your browser's network tab while you use a tool, or turn on airplane mode once the page has loaded.

How it's paid for

There is no paid plan, no account and no watermark. Your device does the processing, so hosting costs stay small, and Google ads on the site cover them. The privacy page explains what the ads and visitor counts collect.

Where to start

Most people come for the PDF tools, the image tools (including compress to 50 KB for form uploads) or the developer utilities. The whiteboard is for sketching and planning with others, with live sessions that are end-to-end encrypted.
