Age Calculator: Exact Age on Any Date

Enter a date of birth to get the exact age in years, months and days, today or on any other date, such as the age cut-off date in an exam or job notice. It also shows the age in total months, weeks and days, the next birthday and the day of the week you were born, and it handles 29 February birthdays and month ends correctly.

How to use Age Calculator

  1. Enter the date of birth. It is remembered in this browser for next time.
  2. Leave Age as on at today, or change it to another date, such as the cut-off date in an official notice.
  3. Read the exact age in years, months and days, then the totals, the next birthday and the day you were born. Each row has a copy button.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my age on an exam's cut-off date?

Find the date on which age is counted in the official notice; it is often a date such as 1 January or 1 August of the exam year. Enter your date of birth, set Age as on to that date, and compare the years, months and days with the limits in the notice. This tool doesn't know any exam's limits or relaxations, so always take those from the notice itself.

How is the exact age counted?

In whole years, then whole months, then days, counted from your birthday each month. Someone born on 15 January is 1 month old on 15 February. On 14 March they are 1 month and 27 days old in an ordinary year, or 28 days in a leap year, because the days are counted from 15 February. You turn a year older on your birthday itself, not the day before.

What if I was born on 29 February?

In years without 29 February, the calculator counts your birthday on 28 February, so you turn a year older that day. Some laws and organisations use 1 March instead; if it matters, for example for a cut-off date that falls on 28 February or 1 March, check the rule that applies to you.

What happens with birthdays on the 31st?

When a month is shorter, the monthly anniversary falls on its last day. Someone born on 31 January is 1 month old on 28 February (29 in a leap year) and 1 month and 1 day old on 1 March. The total in days is always exact, whatever the month lengths.

Is the age in days exact?

Yes. It is the number of days between the two dates on the calendar, counting leap years, and doesn't depend on your time zone or the time of day. Weeks are those days in sevens, with the days left over.

Is my date of birth stored anywhere?

Only in this browser's local storage, so it's filled in next time. It isn't sent to a server. Clear the date field to remove it.

How the exact age is worked out

The calculator finds the most whole months since the date of birth whose monthly anniversary isn't after the chosen date, always counting from the birth date itself so short months never add up to a drift. Those months become years and months; the days since the last anniversary are the days.
